When thinking of the word “childproofing” typically images of ugly cushioned padded materials and locks – lots of locks – come to mind. I was so happy to find “Child Safety House Calls” because through their website Dr. Joel Clingenpeel and Dr. James Schmidt show how to make your home into a safe “yes” environment for your kiddos without sacrificing fun. Did you catch the “doctor” part of that sentence? The experience that Dr. Clingenpeel and Dr. Schmidt have comes not only from being father’s of young families, but also from over ten years combined experience as physicians in a Pediatric Emergency Room of a leading children’s hospital in Hampton Roads, Virginia where they continue to work. Each day they see the results of inadequate childproofing resulting in falls, burns, poisoning, drowning, choking, strangulation, and more. A few years ago Dr. Clingenpeel and Dr. Schmidt realized that they could slow the steady stream of toddlers and infants into emergency rooms by sharing their knowledge of child safety with parents, testing and selling child safety products that work well, and conducting child safety home consultations and that is how “Child Safety House Calls” was developed! I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to do a review and giveaway of one of their CSHC Preferred Products.
One piece of furniture that seems to always be a safety hazard to little ones is the coffee table. In fact we had completely taken our coffee table out of the living room when Dilly was learning to walk and still had not put it back, but with the amazing ABC Fun Pad I was able to reunite with our coffee table and turn it into a fun place to play!
The ABC Fun Pad comes in two sizes. The small size fits tables that range from 18″x40″ to 26″x48″ and the large fits tables ranging from 20″x48″ to 40″x68″. My coffee table is about 19″x41″ so it is on the smaller end of the small sized cover so that is why it looks a little bunched up. The ABC Fun Pad also comes in two different themes – city and castle. I chose the city theme for Dilly and Sugar because they both love playing with their toy cars. Sugar even has pink cars! Another great feature of the Fun Pad is that on the opposite side is a plain color. The city theme has a solid gray back and the castle theme has a solid pink back. So if you don’t want the busy play scenes visible the ABC Fun Pad can easily be flipped over to a solid color. If the ABC Fun Pad wasn’t fun enough already with their super cute scenes it gets even better! You can let your kiddos color on the solid side with washable markers and it will come right out in the wash – stain free! Put their creative imaginations to work with no worries. I’ll be honest… I have not informed Dilly of this super fun aspect of her ABC Fun Pad. We recently found crayon scribbling all over the wall on our staircase and I think it best to wait til she fully understands where she can and can not color, but I am super excited for when we can color on the coffee table together! Until then Dilly can have fun playing with her cars and I can worry less about Sugar when she begins crawling.
I am so happy that I don’t need to worry about the sharp cornered coffee table anymore…
And a tip from Dr. Clingenpeel and Dr. Schmidt to make using the ABC Fun Pad even safer is to pair it up with a set of corner cushions underneath the cover. This will give you the best possible coffee table protection besides removing it completely.
I absolutely love the ABC Fun Pad and wish I had heard about it a lot sooner…. I could of been using my coffee table the past few years! Be sure to check out the Child Safety House Calls website where you can purchase your very own ABC Fun Pad for $49.95.
