Sleep safety is a huge concern for me – after all when babies are little they sleep more than they are awake, so shouldn’t their crib be the safest place possible for them? I literally cringe when I walk past all the crib bedding sets that are sold in stores or see a picture of a baby’s nursery with traditional crib bumpers. For the most part I think it is lack of knowledge that is contributing to parents continuing to purchase traditional crib bumpers. What these parents don’t realize is that traditional crib bumpers pose serious safety risks to their precious babies and their just not worth the cuteness factor. If a baby snuggles up too close to the bumper there is the possibility of re-breathing carbon dioxide which can lead to suffocation and as they get older there is the possibility of using the bumper to climb on which could result in falling out of the crib. On the other hand without a bumper it is possible for babies slender arms and legs to slide between the crib slats and get caught. This is what Dale and Susan Waters experienced in 1999 when their daughter continuously was getting her limbs caught in the slats on her crib. After searching for a bumper that was safe and realizing no such product was being manufactured Dale and Susan decided to dedicate their time and talents to designing a safer, comfortable, breathable crib bumper design that would be easy for every parent to use. In 2002 they began selling the patented BreathableBaby Bumper.
When Dilly was a baby the only thing in her crib was a fitted sheet. There was no need for crib bumpers at all because she didn’t move about and never got her arms or legs stuck in the slats. She also
was is a thumb sucker so there was no concerns about a pacifier falling out of the crib in the middle of the night. Now Sugar she moves around like crazy! For this reason I am always concerned about her arms or chunky legs getting stuck in between the crib slats and so I was super excited to receive a set of BreathableBaby Bumpers in white for the girls new bedroom. The BreathableBaby Bumpers have so many awesome features including:
- Satin trimmed, breathable padded mesh faces infant – fastener side faces out.
- Easy wrap design – attaches with hook and loop (velcro).
- Collapses when weight is put on to avoid climbing.
- Tucks BELOW mattress for added protection.
- Machine washable & fast drying.
The directions were explained thoroughly which made for a very easy installation. I love how snug and secure the bumper feels and it definitely has done the job of keeping Sugar’s arms and legs in the crib where they belong because there are no openings once the BreathableBaby Bumpers are set up. I wanted to make sure that you could definitely breath through the mesh material and so I placed my mouth against the fabric and breathed. I can tell you that I had absolutely no problem whatsoever breathing and I feel very confident in the safety of my child’s sleep environment. This ease of breathing is due to BreathableBaby’s exclusive fabric with A.C.T.™ Air Channel Technology™ which promotes airflow and helps maintain air access. Before if a parent asked me my opinions on crib bumpers I would say that I was 100% against them and to not waste your money on a crib set because the only thing out of it you needed was the fitted sheet. Now I can say that I will definitely be recommending BreathableBaby Bumpers to every parent I know!!
I chose white because Sugar’s crib sheets and skirt have a bold pattern in them, but there are also many prints available as well as solid colors!
