My Hospital Bag Must Haves….

When I went into labor with Alleigh it was a bit unexpected and I didn’t even have a hospital bag packed.  Needless to say Dustin was running back and forth between the hospital and our house washing clothes and getting things I needed…. luckily we only live about three minutes from the hospital.  I kinda learned my lesson after that and had my bag half way packed with Kaelyn.  But this time I am ready!  And I am gonna show you what I take with me to the hospital and why I take it….. so here we go.

Most everything I will be taking with me is in the picture above, but some things just couldn’t be packed quite yet and so I wrote those items on a piece of paper and stuck it in the top of the bag so I would remember to grab them when I actually go into labor – if that should ever happen, hehe.

And so…. I pack two bags.  One for me & one for Willow.

Mommy’s Bag:
Nursing Bras
(4)
Nursing Pads – I use disposable because I leak so much and have yet to find a washable pad that can contain that much leaking.
Nipple Nurture Balm – This is precautionary because I have never dealt with cracking or bleeding when it comes to nursing, but you never know.
Clothing – I bring comfy clothing…. night gown, t-shirts, sweatpants/shorts, socks…. because let’s face it the hospital socks are not very cute, hehe.
Flip Flops – To wear around the hospital room and when showering.
Toiletries & Wet Bag – Toothbrush, toothpaste, contacts, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, chapstick, hair brush, pony tail holders, razor…. sure the hospital has most of these things, but I like using what I am used to using.  The wet bag is used to transport everything so it doesn’t leak or spill on my other items.
Medications – Any medications and vitamins I take on a regular basis I make sure to bring with me.
Overnight Pads & Adult Disposable Underwear – Ok, this might sound a bit crazy.  But hear me out.  Instead of wearing the mesh underwear and pads the hospital provides I use these items.  I bleed a lot after childbirth…. and when I say a lot please understand this looks like a murder scene and when using the hospital provided products I would end up leaking all over myself and ruining so many clothes.  Not only did that irritate me, but I was always self conscious when visitors would stop by because I was afraid I had blood all over the place.  And so now I wear the adult disposable underwear like normal underwear and place one of the overnight pads inside.  Throughout the day I change the pads and only change the disposable underwear if I leak through the pads.  I began doing this when I had Kaelyn and never had a single leaking issue where the blood made it through the pad and disposable underwear.  It saved my clothes and saved me from embarrassment and so I continue this procedure until the bleeding slows down to a pad manageable level…. which for me is actually a few weeks.
Baby & Me Class Certificates – Alleigh & Kaelyn were required to take a sibling class in order to attend the birth and I have to present them to the nurses/doctors in the room so that they can be in the room.
Electronics – Cell phone, lap top, camera, extra batteries, chargers.
Pillow – I never sleep good without MY pillow, so this is a necessity.
Copy of Birth Wishes – This way when I am focusing on being in labor I still have all my wishes printed out on a paper that can easily be shown to any nurse or doctor that enters my hospital room.

Willow’s Bag:
Cloth Diaper Covers & Newborn Prefolds – As soon as Willow passes the lovely black tarry poop we are going to begin using cloth diapers – so exited!
Disposable Baby Wipes – At our hospital they use these wipes that have to be soaked in water and well we don’t like them…. so we bring our own.
Wet Bag – To transport all her dirty diapers home for washing.
aden+anais Swaddling Blankets (2) – Well obviously to swaddle her… the blankets at the hospital are a bit rough and not very big.  Alleigh and Kaelyn could both break out of the swaddles with no problem even though they liked being swaddled.  This should solve that problem.
Burp Cloths – I suppose I could use those blankets we won’t be using for swaddling, but I just prefer to bring my own.
Wubbanubs – These are those cute lil pacifiers (Soothie brand) with the soft animal attached.  As soon as Willow has nursed successfully a few times I will introduce the Wubbanub.
Baby Wash & Shampoo – Alleigh & Kaelyn were both born with sensitive skin and the products used at the hospital dried their skin out terrible.  So instead I will bring my own sensitive skin products and Dustin will give Willow her first bath – that’s something that is listed in the Birth Wishes as well.
Going Home Outfit – Well ya gotta have something cute to wear home!  While at the hospital I will use the little white t-shirts they have just so I don’t get them confused with my own.
Boppy Travel Pillow – I prefer the Boppy pillow for nursing and was very excited when they came out with the travel size option.

And here are the bags all ready to go!

So what about you?  Is there anything you bring that I don’t?  Any suggestions?  Even though this is my third baby I could totally be forgetting something that would make life at the hospital so much easier for myself.

Our bag contents are pretty much identical. When I was in the hospital with my first birth, my labor was SUPER long, and I had someone go get my cross-stitch project that I was working on, so I wouldn’t be bored. lol All the other ones were super fast, but I was still glad to have a book for after the births, when the babe was sleeping, but I wasn’t.

You are very thorough and organized! I didnt pack my bag last time until after labor started and we knew I was going to the hospital…I packed a friggin suitcase lol we were 30mins away so I had to pack for hubby staying too. This time I hope to be better prepared and organized!

Do you do anything special for ice-packs for “you know where”? With my #1, all my hospital gave me was a rubber glove filled with crushed ice. Not very comfortable to wear, as you can imagine! I still need to figure out a better system for #2 (due Aug 24th). I have heard of mamas making their own “pad-sicles”, but I think a couple small reusable gel ice packs would be nice. Not sure what others are getting from their hospitals but I know it’s better than what I got! 😉

  4. Great list. I have my bags mostly packed.. need to add a few things. I was going to bring my boppy.. but totally forgot about the travel boppy.. gonna get that out to take instead. I also have a hospital gown of my own so I will take that too. I didn’t have any leaking issues with my first since it took 4 days for my milk to come in.. wonder if I should take some in case this time..

I saw your issue with your nursing pads, I am a leaker also and I found that fuzzibuns has a 3 pack of nursing pads for 12$! I loved them when I had my 2nd and will definitely use them again. They are thick yet not to thick that they get in the way and they also pull the wetness off of you just like a cloth diaper does for baby, good luck and thanks for the great blog

I also will be bringing witch hazel pads.spray for myself… after the 1st one I had my mom running out to pick those up for me and they were wonderful.

  8. Great list! I am bad. I didn’t pack until my contractions were about 3 min. apart haha. I had to stop in between each one and slowly pack one thing at a time.

    Great list!
Also remember any of your husbands meds if required!
I also brought a tennis ball for my husband to use if I had back labor, and I was glad I did. I packed a few snacks for him as well.

When I had my daughter 26 yrs ago I had a bag packed a month before I had her.She was 2 wks late.Lol! I brought some soft body spray with me,hey I was only 20 and I wanted to smell good. After 19 1/2 hrs of labor I’m glad I did. I wanted chocolate as soon as I could eat.
I’m excited to see little Willow when she gets here.

Love your list. We pack alot of the same things but there are a few I will be adding that I had not thought of before.Plus a few new items that I learned from last time after having a c section.

  12. Melissa H. says:

Great list! It definitely helped me add a few things to mine, which I intend on packing this week!

I do have iPod + headphones and camera on mine, if you were needing yours? 🙂

  13. Priscilla Benavides says:

I am 8 weeks pregnant and had my last baby in June of 2011 and this will be baby #4 but it is always a good idea to have a checklist of what to take to the hospital because we can always overlook items that we will need and don’t think of beforehand.

  14. Honey Mendez says:

I love this list! It is so thorough and you went over. Every Single item for every scenario possible! I’m having my third and final C section with baby number 3 in Late March- Early April but this pretty much sums up the essentials, and I love the ‘Birth Wishes’ list! There are some things better explained on paper rather than repeating it over and over to different attending nurses during your hospital stay.
