There is just something that attracts me to toys made of natural materials like wood and cotton fabric for my girls – they have that old fashioned, warm, wholesome feeling that just can’t be found in a hard plastic toy. The German toy company, HABA, is known for these types of wooden toys. In fact HABA favors wood as its material for most of the toys they manufacture. They use beech and maple because they are regenerative and the natural markings make each toy unique. All of their wooden toys that are manufactured in Germany are made from reforested timbers. Something I found really interesting is that in Germany more trees are being planted each year then harvested! Plus when it comes to HABA toys that are colored instead of just the natural wood they use safe, non-toxic, water based lacquers on our products instead of paints – they truly have the safety and well being of our children at heart.
Willow received a toy from HABA’s 2012 Pure Nature Organic toy line which includes 8 adorable products which would all make for perfect gifts for a little one’s first Christmas. All of the toys in the Pure Nature Organic” are made of the highest quality cottons for both the threads and outer materials which are produced in accordance with the Global Organic Textile Standards. These standards for organic textiles and the use of raw materials ensure safety not just for children but also for the environment. These toys do contain polyester filling however this is to ensure that Pure Nature Organic products by HABA are hygienic and washable. The reason for this is fillings made of natural material have very poor drying quality which would then present a greater risk of mold, so polyester is preferred.
Willow is just beginning to grasp toys and so the Pure Nature Clutching Toy Magic Leaf was the perfect choice for her. It is composed of two pieces – the maple wood ring and slip on organic cover that stays attached with Velcro. Willow’s tiny hands easily grasp the wooden ring and once she starts teething it will be a nice safe teething toy for her. I love that the organic cover can be removed and thrown in the wash plus it has adorable details. When touched the leaves make a crinkly sound and the red circle has a rattle inside. Not to mention the colors make it a great gender neutral option.
HABA has an amazing selection of high quality toys that you can check out on their website. Plus they are carried nationwide in over 1,000 U.S. specialty retail stores and in specialty catalogs and websites. Which reminds me tomorrow (11.10.12) is Neighborhood Toy Store Day! Perhaps you could celebrate by checking to see if your local toy store has HABA toys then stock up for Christmas.
