Keeping their family safe is at the top of every parents priority list and we try the best we can, but sometimes there are products and even foods in our homes that can pose a danger to our children.  Why would we let these things into our homes?  The answer is simple – because we don’t know they are a danger!  In fact in 2011 there were 121 recalls for children’s products in the United States, which accounted for 11.63 million units of product – 11.63 million times something could have potentially went tragically wrong.   To be a tad more specific of those 121 children’s product recalls there were 36 nursery related items, 32 clothing items, 26 toys, 14 outdoor & sports products, 6 furniture, 5 Miscellaneous and 2 jewelry related products. The problem is that even though these products are recalled every year in many instances parents don’t find out about them until they either accidentally stumble across it on a recall board while shopping or when it is pushed out through mass media.  And unfortunately many times parents find out too late.

So how do we fix this?  Believe it or not – there’s an app for that!

Now let me explain exactly what Recalls Plus is and how it works…

In a nut shell Recalls Plus stops parents from waiting for product recall information to eventually find it’s way to them and instead delivers it first hand.  It tracks recalls issued by four Federal agencies in the United States including Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and puts them all in one convenient place for parents or caregivers to easily access.

I really like that Recalls Plus gives a variety of options for sending alerts that apply to the user.  You can select checklists by age (newborn, infant, toddler) giving the ability to choose common products from an easy preset checklist.  You can also add any product you choose that you either own or want to buy – I would suggest entering in products as you bring them into your home.  For example when your little ones open presents when visiting relatives during the holidays immediately enter them into the app – less worries for later on.  Oh and you can also track foods by selecting from 8 FDA-mandated food allergies to get alerts on related food recalls.  By doing this Recalls plus will only send alerts when a related recall applies to one of the products or food allergens the user has listed. Plus you can also browse the nationwide list of recalls in case something slipped past your created lists – I plan to skim through this at least once a week.

Great news!  The Recalls Plus app is available to literally everyone because it can be found in the Apple App Store, Google Play, and even on Facebook making it very easy to instantly share recall information with family and friends.  So what are you waiting for – download the app and keep your family safe.  It’s too simple not to.
