The Breastfeeding Center–Massillon, Ohio: A Crunchy Mama’s Dream Come True!

HarperHouseholdI have been blessed with three adorable little girls who have come into this world breastfeeding pros literally from the first latch.  I have also been blessed with a body that produces more than enough milk for my babies with hardly any issues.  I’ve had two occurrences of mastitis, but other than that breastfeeding has been smooth sailing for me over the past five years.  I know that my story isn’t typical and that many women struggle with many different aspects of breastfeeding from proper latches to supply to cracked/sore nipples and everything in between.  Sometimes finding support and encouragement to get through those tough times when trying to establish a solid breastfeeding relationship can be difficult.  Luckily the women that live in or near Massillon, Ohio have somewhere they can go to receive that support and encouragement all in a relaxing, home-like environment – The Breastfeeding Center.

The Breastfeeding Center was a life long dream of Elizabeth “Betsy” Studer, Registered Nurse and Board Certified Lactation Consultant with over 25 years experience working with breastfeeding babies and mothers.

After the birth of her third child in 1985 (that’s when I was born too, hehe), Betsy realized that breastfeeding support did not exist in the local hospitals and was very limited in the community.  My own mother can vouch that this is true because she has told me numerous times that breastfeeding just wasn’t even presented as an option to her when I was born.  Instead it was bottles and formula.  After watching me nurse all three of my girls she has told me many times that she wishes she could have done the same for my sister and I.  And so realizing this Betsy started counseling breastfeeding mothers, became a board certified lactation consultant in 1987 and began teaching the first breastfeeding class in Stark County at Aultman Hospital.

Betsy is one smart {Milkmaker Lactation Boosting, hehe} cookie!  She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ohio State University and her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Akron. She is a Past-President of the Ohio Lactation Consultant Association and was their Conference Coordinator for nine years.  Plus she is the mother of four children – she truly does it all.  After working out of her home office for 19 years, Betsy purchased a home nursingroomzoned commercial in 2004 and spent 18 months remodeling it. On June 28, 2006 she was proud to open her freestanding Breastfeeding Center at 2800 Lincoln Way East in Massillon, Ohio and I am proud to say that it is by far my favorite store to visit.

At The Breastfeeding Center you will find lots of awesome services and products – it is truly a “crunchy” mama’s dream come true.  You can attend a breastfeeding class or schedule a one on one consultation.  Any time they are open mama’s are welcome to use the nursing room complete with comfy chairs, changing table, and digital baby scale.

The showroom at The Breastfeeding Center is full of so much awesomeness I could seriously go broke in there, hehe.  Cloth diapers, baby slings, baby carriers, swaddling blankets, Sophie the Giraffe, amber jewelry,  and so much more.  Not too long ago I had to make an emergency stop to pick up a new Sophie the Giraffe when Willow’s was bitten by Gramma Patty’s new dog, hehe.  And my most favorite line of products that Betsy carries has to be aden+anais.  For the longest time my girls have enjoyed their products from the swaddle blankets to dream blankets and sleepings bags.  But now I get to as well when I cuddle up in my very own daydream blanket – you can pick one up at The Breastfeeding Center too!

There are also fitting rooms so you can try on the nursing bras and make sure you have a perfect fit.  The Bravado Nursing Bra that I have from The Breastfeeding Center is my best bra by far!  Being able to try out and actually see the products is one of the reasons I truly love The Breastfeeding Center.

In addition to all the awesome products you can purchase there are also breast pumps available for rent including the best selection and pricing for Medela pumps and products in North East Ohio.  Plus there are demonstration models of all the Medela pumps so you can see, hear, and understand which pump will be best for your situation.

Oh and one more thing!  There are weekly breastfeeding support group meetings.  Every Thursday a group meets for moms/babies and on Tuesdays for moms/babies/kids.  Plus once a month there is a working mother’s breastfeeding group that meets in the evenings.

I truly can’t say enough about Betsy and The Breastfeeding Center.  I have heard so many wonderful stories of women that were struggling with nursing their babies and Betsy has helped them develop a breastfeeding relationship that other wise never would have happened.  Thank you Betsy for everything you do and running such a wonderful shop.

Be sure to check out The Breastfeeding Center website and follow on Facebook too.  Even if you’re not local to Massillon, Ohio there are always great conversations and tips being shared on the Facebook page that I am sure you would enjoy.  Plus shipping is available on all products too.Signature

I agree wholeheartedly! My oldest was born in 2005 and we had some serious nursing issues. Without Betsy and the support group, I would have given up. Instead, I was encouraged by other moms and helped by Betsy’s years of experience and her knowledge. I ALWAYS give her name to expectant moms who are even considering nursing!

  11. What an amazing resource for nursing moms!

  12. Wow! What I wouldn’t give for a place like that where I live! I’ve had so many issues with breastfeeding (with each of my boys). I’m thankful that this time around I have a very pro-breastfeeding pediatrician or I would have given up weeks ago. I think every community would benefit from a place like this. I sincerely hope her business thrives.
