A Perfect Preschool Backpack – The Sidekick

School supply shopping has always been one of my favorite things to do.  This year, the nerdy girl deep inside me was almost as excited about taking my oldest son school supply shopping as I was about him going to preschool for the first time (yep, insert tears here!).  When he brought home his school list, the first item was a backpack large enough for 8.5” x 11” papers.  As he has gotten older, we’ve used toddler backpacks for him instead of diaper bags, but none of them were big enough to fit a full sheet of paper.  After searching through our local stores, I was a bit frustrated.  It seemed like every bag geared toward preschool-aged boys that would fit a full size paper was either vinyl superheroes or almost as big as he was.

We turned our search online and found an awesome company that had just what we were looking for.  Stephen Joseph Gifts is a company that has been around for 30 years and offers a variety of adorable toys, gear, crafts, and accessories for preschool and elementary ages.  We found their Sidekick Backpacks, which is part of their EAT, LEARN, PLAY collection.  With every purchase from this collection, Stephen Joseph Gifts donates to one of three highly rated non-profit organizations.  The purchase of each Sidekick Backpack donates $1 to the Children’s Scholarship Fund.

The Sidekick Backpack was everything we were looking for.  The bag measures at 10.5” x 12.75” x 3.5”, which is perfect to fit a full sized sheet of paper, but not so big that my 27 lb preschooler is completely overwhelmed.  They had so many cute themed bags to choose from, including a dog (Aiden’s choice), airplane, dino, ladybug, and owl.

One of my favorite things about the bag (aside from the perfect size) is the padded and size appropriate shoulder straps.  The straps fit his shoulders well, didn’t slip off, and were more comfortable for Aiden to wear.  The colors were bright and playful, and the bag has held its shape nicely.  He loves the floppy ears that are securely attached on the front. The small zippered compartment works great for an after school snack and there are two elastic mesh pockets that are perfect size for straw cups and water bottles.

Aiden was very excited to start off his first day of preschool with all of his school supplies and gear fitting perfectly in his Stephen Joseph Gifts dog Sidekick Backpack.  I also felt great knowing that our purchase donated money to an important organization that assists families with tuition costs.  We couldn’t be happier with our new bag!

So cute! I remember I had the same challenge when my daughter went to Kindergarten. We ended up finding an adorable (and appropriately sized) backpack at Pottery Barn Kids, and it held up really well!

Oh, and I kind of geek out of school supply shopping too. 😉

Very cute backpack! Buying backpacks is my favorite part of school supply shopping. My youngest daughter (who is almost 4) started 4k this year and I also have a 1st grader. We got ours online at Land’s End.

  9. First of all, he’s a cutie and I love that cute backpack! We had the same issue last year when our preschool-er was needing her first backpack… they were all HUGE and the smaller cute ones wouldn’t hold that size piece of paper. Wish I would’ve known about this place! Thanks for the info, going to check them out now.
