I participated in this program on behalf of The Fred Rogers Company and The Motherhood. All opinions are my own.
There is only one show I vividly remember watching when I was a little kid and I watched it every single day at 5 o’clock while my mom made dinner – Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. My favorite part of the show was always when the trolley took us to the Land of Make Believe to visit Henrietta Pussycat, Lady Elaine, King Friday, and of course Daniel Tiger. While watching cartoons with my girls one day I was excited to see a new show – Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood – which premiered on September 3rd 2012 and is a spin off of the iconic Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood I remember from my childhood. This show is geared towards children ages 2-4, but all of my girls really enjoy it.
What I loved most about this new show was that the producers found it very important to maintain certain aspects of the original series to create a sense of nostalgia for parents that would be watching with their own children. For example at the shows opening both characters are shown putting on their signature red sweaters and shoes. Plus in the background with Daniel Tiger we can see miniature models from Mister Roger’s Land of Make Believe.
Another interesting fact is that Daniel Tiger and all of his friends are descendants of the original cast of characters. My first time watching the show I knew they all looked familiar, but I was having trouble placing Miss Elaina then it all clicked when I saw this awesome family tree.
Since it’s premier Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood has been among the top 10 highest rated programs for preschoolers and among the top 5 highest rated programs among moms – pretty impressive! I believe the reason this show has been so well received is not only it’s connection to the well loved Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, but also because so much thought and care has been put into each and every episode. Before creating each episode producers present the scripts to a preschool audience of 2-4 year olds to make sure they understand and grasp the concepts and stories. Each episode also contains a learning goal and strategy song to help reinforce that concept. Many times I hear my little ones singing those songs when the show isn’t even on anymore. Some of their favorites include…
When you feel so mad that you want to ROAR,
Take a deep breath and count to four. 1…2…3…4…
You can take a turn, and then I’ll get it back.
When you have to go potty, STOP… and go right away.
Flush, wash…and be on your way!
All of which are excellent lessons to learn and apply to every day life.
Shows that resonate and teach my children valuable lessons, like Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, make me want to purchase toys so that my girls can continue the fun through play once the show is over. After all play is the work of a child and even I enjoy getting down on the floor and playing with my kids. I was thrilled to learn that there is a great line of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood toys that are available exclusively at Toys “R” Us and even more thrilled to receive some for the girls to try out. Every toy in this line is designed to inspire creativity and imagination with open ended play.
We received a Daniel Tiger Mini Plush and Bungalow Adventure Play Set.
The Daniel Tiger Mini Plush is absolutely adorable and measures approximately eight inches tall which is perfect for little hands to carry around. He is super soft and I love that his facial features including his eyes are embroidered on so I feel safe allowing Willow to carry him around. He is also very detailed from the watch on his wrist to the pockets on his hoodie. Everything that your child would expect to see on Daniel is there. Plus the Mini Plush is very affordable at $7.99 so you can afford to collect Daniel and all his friends. Perfect stocking stuffers!
Kaelyn has especially enjoyed playing with the Bungalow Adventure Play Set. This play set measures 12”x8”x4” and has a very open design which is great for little preschool aged hands. The front door opens and Kaelyn loves making Daniel go in and out. It includes a Daniel Tiger figure with moving head and arms and four pieces of furniture. With a simple flip of the furniture and addition of a safari hat Daniel’s cozy bungalow is transformed into a jungle safari! The trolley bed becomes a cave, rug transforms into a pond with stones, chair turns into a roaring lion, table flips to reveal safari Tigey, and the floor flips up with an elephant and swinging monkey scene. I was also very pleased to find that all of the pieces fit inside the bungalow when the girls were done playing. It did take me a few tries to figure out how each piece of furniture must be placed, but when placed correctly everything fits.
My girls couldn’t be more pleased with their new Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood toys and I know they will be asking for more for Christmas. Luckily there are quite a few more toys in the current line which should make their Christmas very merry. If you have a little Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood fan be sure to check out Toys “R” Us where they are exclusively available.
Oh and keep your eye out for new special episodes including “Snowflake Day” on November 25th and “Daniel’s Big Feelings” week on February 17th.
