Does your little one have a favorite stuffed animal that they drag everywhere with them? I remember my sister dragging around a stuffed bunny with her everywhere and oh my goodness did that thing get disgusting, but prying it away from her to wash it was practically impossible. In the early 1960s Joan and Patsy Bommerscheim solved this dilemma by creating the Bommerscheim Buddie for their children… the only problem was they didn’t share it with the world. In the 1980s Patsy continued making the Buddies for all of her grandchildren, but it wasn’t until this year that the Bommerscheim Sisters Company was formed. Finally the Bommerscheim Buddie can be enjoyed by children all over the world including my little Willow Jean.
So what exactly is a Bommerscheim Buddie?
A nostalgic cuddly toy with a retro look that children love with a unique removable cover which makes keeping them clean a snap for mom and dad. Each Buddie measures 15 inches tall (including the ears), 7 inches wide, roughly 3 1/2 inches thick and weighs about 1/3 pound making them the perfect size for young children to tote around. Willow especially enjoys dragging her Buddie around by the long ears. They are available in both flannel and fleece fabrics with a variety of solid colors and prints to choose from.
Additional covers are sold separately giving you quite a few options. If your child is the kind that gets attached to their Buddie and refuses to let him go in the washing machine without a war you can get two identical covers so one is always on while the other is getting cleaned – they’ll never know their Buddie was MIA for a bit. Or you can get different colors/patterns allowing your kiddo to choose what they want their Buddie to look like each day.
The covers are also very easy to remove thanks to the cleverly designed “feet” and “tail” that disguises the Velcro closures. I really like that they chose Velcro instead of buttons, snaps, or zippers because this makes the Buddies very safe since there are no small parts. In fact the Bommerscheim Buddies only consist of cotton flannel/fleece, Velcro, and USA made polyester fiber fill.
Speaking of no small parts…I absolutely adore the face…. seriously, how stinkin cute?! The embroidered face along with the visible serging gives the Buddie a nostalgic vintage vibe that you just can’t find in stuffed animals today. Since the facial features are very simplistic this also helps young children to recognize their Buddie regardless of what color/pattern cover might be on him at the moment.
There is also the option to further customize your Bommerscheim Buddie by having a symbol or text embroidered on the body of the cover. You even get to choose the thread color! This would make a great personalized gift for baby’s first Christmas. And have I mentioned just how cuddly they are… Willow simply can’t get enough of her Buddie snuggling with it nonstop.
We are huge fans of the Bommerscheim Buddies here at the Harper Household. Plus at $19.99 for one Buddie and cover with additional covers selling for $13.99 this is an affordable Christmas gift that will get lots of love all through out the year. The Bommerscheim Sisters Company also has Ittie Bittie Buddies that would make perfect stocking stuffers as well as blankets and Buddie Families. But you better get your own because Willow isn’t going to be sharing hers, hehe.
I do have good news though! One lucky Happenings of the Harper Household reader is going to win their very own Bommerscheim Buddie. To enter fill out the giveaway form below. Good luck!
