Corey and I are big believers in getting the kids away from the television and video games and getting them up and using their imagination. When we were offered the opportunity to review the Gears! Gears! Gears! Beginners Building Set from Learning Resources we jumped at the offer. We couldn’t pass it up for a couple of reasons. One reason is it is from Learning Resources, which has quickly become a favorite company here at the Hilton house and two; it makes our boys think and use their imagination while playing with it. First let me tell you a little about the company.
The Learning Resources Company is a global manufacturer of innovative and hands on educational products that are trusted by teachers and parents and loved by kids. They have more than 1,100 products that are sold in more than 80 countries and range from preschool to middle school age markets. Their mission is to support teachers and parents by providing unique, high quality educational tools that enhance instruction and provide engaging learning experiences that meet children’s individual needs. Their products that are developed by top educators, build foundational skills in all subject areas through exploration, imagination and fun. They also offer simple technology products and teacher resources to support the delivery of education.
The beginners building set is a 96 piece set that consists of 8 green base pieces, 48 gears in a rainbow of colors, 8 purple pillar extenders, 19 green square pillars, 12 blue six way axles, and 1 crank handle.
This building set is a child’s introduction to the world of construction and movement. Bright colors and easy to assemble pieces encourages children to create moving masterpieces. There are so many ways to build; children discover something new every time they play. Corbin has made numerous “masterpieces” and he loves that when you put the crank handle on a gear and turn it all the gears that are connected will turn as well.
There are so many possibilities with this set. The instructions that are included in the set give you directions on how to build a crawling caterpillar, a souped-up race car, and zigzag gears. It is really easy to get started building your own creation. First you need to build a platform using the green base pieces which connect together by sliding the side pegs into the slots. There are many ways to arrange base pieces from a simple row to a pyramid or zigzag. Next add gears by simply popping them on the pegs that are on the base. Finally add the crank handle and make the gears move! It’s that simple.
The Gears!Gears!Gears! set provides many opportunities for children to experiment with simple mechanics and science. There are “Ex-GEAR-iments” in the instruction booklet that encourage children to notice interesting movements, connections, and explore the fascinating action that can be created with gears.
It also encourages creativity while building fine motor skills in hands on construction play. Corbin will literally sit down and play with this beginner set for up to an hour at a time. That is unheard of for most toys in our house. During this time he is arranging and rearranging the gears and pillars then attaching the handle and laughing with excitement as all the gears turn. Once your child has mastered this set there are a few others in the Gears!Gears! Gears! line. We have a couple birthdays for two little boys coming up very soon and these additional sets will be perfect additions to the beginner set to build even larger more complex creations.
This set has an able play rating which is an independent evaluation of play products for children with special needs which evaluates areas including physical, cognitive, sensory and communicative. GEARS! GEARS! GEARS! has won several awards including Canadian Toy Testing Council Three star seal (1997), The good toy guide, gold award (1997)-UK, Family fun toy winner (1994), Oppenheim Toy portfolio gold seal, best toy award (1994/95).
