I grew up with a huge bookshelf overflowing with books, and I knew that I wanted my kids to have the same thing growing up. So early on in my first pregnancy, we started collecting new and used books that would be appropriate for all ages. As our family expanded and the boys grew, we added books based on life events coming up- books on the dentist, having a new baby, the potty chair, and other exciting milestones. So recently, we added A Bed for Fred, written by Lori Zoss and illustrated by Cheri Polk, to our collection.
A Bed for Fred is a children’s book all about Fred, the Basset Hound. One morning, he realizes that his bed and his dad are missing. After a rough breakfast, and needing a nap, he goes on a journey outside to search for his bed. Along the way, he meets a few friends- a mouse, a frog, a cricket, and an owl.
And wouldn’t you know, that owl sure is pretty wise! The owl catches on, gives Fred a little direction, and helps him find his dad. Fred tells his dad how scared he was, and Dad explains that he has been busy getting Fred a nice, new, bigger bed. It ends with Fred peacefully dreaming in his brand new big blue bed.
Aiden loved playing sleuth and trying to guess where Fred’s dad and bed were. Reese connected right away with the idea that Fred got a new “bog boy bed” just like he did a few months ago. As a mom, I enjoyed that Fred told his dad how scared he was when he couldn’t find his dad or his bed, and his dad apologized for making Fred scared. It was a great example of communicating emotions and fears between parents and children in an open way. Plus, in the future, I know A Bed for Fred will also be a great milestone tool to use when Ezra is ready to transition to a toddler bed and say goodbye to his crib.
