Since I am back in to the groove of blogging on a frequent basis I realized that I never shared how we announced we were pregnant with Baby Harper #4 to our immediate family. When pregnant with our first I gave my mom a greeting card for Grandma and we simply told the rest of the family. When pregnant with #2 I put Alleigh in a big sister shirt and let her “tell” the family. With #3 I bought personalized shirts announcing the news for the big girls to wear. But this time I wanted to do things a little differently. I wanted the announcement to be more involved than simply just telling them and so I came up with the idea to hide the message inside of an egg. And here is just how I did it….
SECRET MESSAGE EGGS
First I took raw eggs and washed them with soap and water. I then used a sewing needle to make a small hole in each end and used my lung power to blow out the yolk and egg whites. Once the eggs were empty I rinsed them with water until clear and let them sit over night to completely dry out.
The next step was placing the secret message inside. Since I’m not a huge fan of my hand writing I chose to print the messages using my computer and printer. I then cut them in to strips, rolled them up, and slid them through the same hole I used to blow out the yolk and egg whites.
Now it was time to decorate the eggs. I ripped up blue tissue paper in to small pieces and using a mixture of mod podge and a little water I completely covered the egg. I did two layers of tissue paper, but if using a darker color one layer would probably be fine.
The last step was assembling the little packages. I find these cute oval boxes at a local craft store which I filled with some faux grass, set the egg inside, then tied shut with bakers twine. I made sure to include a little note on the outside of the box that said “Open & Crack Me!” so that the recipients would know exactly what to do with this random little gift.
Once all the eggs were finished it was time to go visit the family. The big girls were so excited to hand out the little packages and hovered when each recipient would crack them open. Wondering what reactions we received? Of course I captured them…
I loved seeing everyone’s reactions and they all loved the secret message eggs!
