Thanksgiving is definitely one of my favorite holidays.  I love spending time with my loved ones and enjoying lots of yummy food.  It’s also the perfect time to reflect on everyone and everything I am thankful for while encouraging my children to do the same.  It’s amazing how much your outlook on life can change when you count your blessings instead of focusing on the negatives.  And there are so many things to be thankful for, so many blessings that we just tend to take for granted.  This year I thought it would be fun to “give Extra” by surprising one of those blessings with a little Thanksgiving gift basket filled with Extra Gum and some other items to brighten their day as well.

And so while shopping at Target I headed to the candy and gum aisle where I quickly realized there are tons of flavors of Extra gum with many that seemed very Thanksgiving-ish…. yup, that’s a word.  The Peach Cobbler, Cinnamon Roll, and Apple Crisp stood out the most to me and it was a tough decision, but I ended up choosing Apple Crisp.  After all the person that my six year old daughter, Alleigh, and I had chosen to surprise was her first grade teacher.  Teacher… apples… seemed logical.

I am truly thankful that Alleigh was placed in this particular teacher’s classroom.  She is an amazing teacher to all of her students and makes sure they are all staying on track.  Alleigh has been doing exceptionally well and was getting a tad bored with her reading assignments. Mrs. Taylor realized this and after speaking with me has begun sending home one additional book a week to keep Alleigh challenged.  I appreciate the fact that she not only noticed that Alleigh needed this to keep her interested and challenged, but also that she discussed it with me so as not to overwhelm her.

To show just how much we appreciate her teacher Alleigh and I also selected a few other items to add to her gift including a pumpkin scented candle, kitchen towels with turkey applique, as well as a beautiful bangle bracelet.  The bracelet is engraved with the teacher’s prayer, “Lord let me be a teacher of knowledge who will guide our youth and grant them the necessary understanding.”

Of course we needed a cute way to present this gift and I found just what I was looking for in the Target One Spot – how adorable is this chicken wire basket?

I also made a quick little printable to attach a pack of Extra gum to so that it would read “This Thanksgiving I’m EXTRA thankful for you!”  Feel free to print out some for yourself too.  I recommend printing on orange paper and then layering on top of a brown piece of cardstock for extra stability.  You can then either poke a few holes and tie the pack of gum on with baker’s twine or simply use some double sided tape to attach.  This was the perfect finishing touch to our gift basket, but you could also hand these little thankful notes out by themselves.  They would be perfect for the mail person, hairdresser, UPS/FedEx truck driver, or even as a surprise for your next door neighbor.

As you can probably tell Alleigh is very excited to surprise her teacher with this gift to show her how thankful we both are for her.  I think she’ll love it!  Is there someone in your life that you would like to surprise by giving them a little Extra?  Be sure to utilize our free printable and pick up some Extra gum to go along with it.  There are so many flavors to choose from and it’s bound to brighten their day.
