Let’s imagine a few scenarios.  It’s Saturday afternoon and you’re running a little behind on your way to a birthday party when you realize you forgot to pick up a card.  Now you are definitely going to be late because you can’t show up empty handed.  Maybe you look at the calendar and realize today is your parent’s wedding anniversary and you have no card to give them.  Or perhaps a friend that you haven’t seen in a while crosses your mind and the thought to send them a “just thinking of you” or “missing you” card crosses your mind.  You think “I’ll just pick one up the next time I’m at the store,” but on your next shopping trip you completely forget.  Luckily I rarely find myself in these situations because I have a nice little stockpile of Hallmark greeting cards.  And lucky you because I’m going to share exactly how to put together a stockpile and store it without spending a fortune.

The next time you find yourself at Walmart make a stop by the greeting card aisles.  There you will find a huge selection of Hallmark cards starting at only 47 cents each for every occasion a card could possibly be needed.

To create your stockpile while staying on budget follow these simple steps.

1.)  Stay in the 47¢ section.  These cards are just as nice as the cards that are quadruple the cost.  Scratch that.  They are nicer because not only do they send the same message, but they do so while saving you money.  And trust me, the recipient is not going to care how much you spent on a card.

2.)  Cover all occasions.  Instead of only purchasing for events in the near future get at least one card for each occasion when you would use greeting cards.  For example birthdays, graduation, retirement, baby shower, wedding, sympathy, get well soon, thinking of you, miss you, holidays, anniversary,

3.)  Happy birthday to you and your son, daughter, grandparent, significant other, co-worker, and the list goes on and on.  Birthday cards definitely aren’t one size fits all so be sure to get a variety – young boy/girl, teen boy/girl, man/woman, funny, simple.

4.)  Maintain the stockpile.  Each time I go into Walmart I always make sure to swing by the card aisles to pick up a Hallmark 47¢ card or two.  If I have used a card from a specific category I make sure to replace those first.

Now you have a big pile of Hallmark greeting cards just waiting to brighten someone’s day.  But until that day comes it’s important to keep them organized so you can easily locate the card you need.  Plus they need to be stored properly to avoid any wrinkles or crumpled corners.

I have found that the Sterilite CD storage containers {available for purchase at Walmart} are the perfect height and width to organize Hallmark 47 cent cards.  In order to keep everything organized I made a filing system using cardstock which I trimmed down to size using a paper cutter.  I labeled each tab with different occasions and then placed my cards accordingly.

The container will work perfectly as is, but I felt like it needed a little something more.  I decided to cover it with fabric and when I stumbled across this awesome postage stamp inspired fabric I knew it was perfect.  I began by measuring the height of the box and the perimeter then cut my fabric accordingly.  Using a small sponge brush I applied Mod Podge directly to the container, placed the fabric on top, and smoothed out any bubbles.  I then trimmed off any excess around the bottom and added more Mod Podge to secure the fabric to the container forming it to the rounded corners.  To finish I added two thin layers of Mod Podge to the entire surface of the fabric allowing the first layer to completely dry before adding the second.

Once everything was completely dry I placed my Hallmark card stockpile inside.  I also keep some stamps, stickers, and return address labels inside so everything I need is in one place.  Now I can easily find a card whenever the need arises and they are kept in perfect condition.

Plus it looks super cute sitting on my desk.  The great thing about this storage container is that you can use any fabric so if you want it to be mail inspired like me you can go that route or perhaps pick a fabric that matches the decor in the room it will be stored in.  Either way it is sure to turn out great.
