Backyard Fun with the Little Tikes Cape Cottage Playhouse

My favorite time of year is right around the corner.  Autumn is absolutely gorgeous in Ohio with the vibrant leaves and cool breezes.  It is definitely perfect weather to spend time outside.  Willow loves playing in our backyard while her big sisters are at school.  I love that our backyard is fenced in so that I can tend to Lilah without worrying Willow will escape to the front yard.  We recently had the opportunity to try out one of Little Tikes newest playhouses which Willow was super excited about adding to the backyard toys.

The first thing I did when opening up the Little Tikes Cape Cottage Playhouse box was to spread all of the pieces out to make sure everything was in the box and nothing was damaged during shipping.  Ok, so maybe I’m a little weird, but I actually enjoy putting things together.  The words “some assembly required” don’t bother me at all.  However, I do appreciate easy to follow instructions and I much prefer diagrams to an abundance of words that take far too long to decipher.  I was pleasantly surprised with the directions for this playhouse and got right to work.

The four walls slid together with ease and then were secured in place with large plastic bolts using a tool provided by Little Tikes that resembled a key.

The roof was placed on top of the four walls and secured with small red rectangular pieces that matched the red shingles.  These pieces clicked into place so you could hear they were installed correctly.  Aesthetically speaking I really liked that the bolts and shingle pieces matched the rest of the playhouse.

The doors and shutters simply snapped into place on their hinges.  The only part of assembly which required a screwdriver was attaching the flag holders.  I’d like to pick up a small American flag for the girls the next time I’m at the store or perhaps even a plain flag that they could decorate themselves!  I also had to apply the decals.  They were very clearly labeled so it was easy to tell where each decal should be placed.  They are super sticky so be sure that you are putting them in the correct place because there are no second chances.  I recommend applying from the middle and smoothing to the edge to avoid air bubbles.

Willow loves that the shutters open and close and I have heard her pretending to serve ice cream from the windows quite often as her sisters drive by in the Little Tikes Cozy Coupe.  The mail slot adds to the imaginative play.  My girls like writing each other letters and delivering them through the slot.  Another great feature is that the Little Tikes Cape Cottage has two of everything – two doors, two windows with shutters, two flag holders, two mail slots – which makes play time with friends and siblings much more enjoyable {for mom}.

I do want to mention that the Little Tikes Cape Cottage Playhouse is rather lightweight compared to other Little Tikes playhouses we have owned in the past.  When I first opened the box the pieces felt a bit flimsy to me, but once the entire house is assembled it feels rather sturdy.  With that being said I would not feel comfortable leaving this playhouse outside through the winter or even during high winds.  The good news is that since it is lightweight and simple to assemble as I discussed earlier it can easily be taken indoors to enjoy during the colder winter months.

Now I gotta run… Willow wants me to come play and who could refuse that sweet smile!
