Roughly fifteen years ago my parents came to me and explained that my dad had been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease).  As a child a virus had attacked his heart which is what caused it to become abnormally enlarged.  As a result his hearts ability to pump blood had become weakened and his ejection fraction was very low.  Ejection fraction is a measurement of how much blood the left ventricle pumps out with each contraction.  A normal heart’s ejection fraction may be between 50 and 70 percent of the total amount of blood in the left ventricle.  When originally diagnosed my father’s ejection fraction was in the 18 to 20 percent range and his doctor gave him a life expectancy of no more than ten years.  He was immediately placed on quite a few different heart medications which he is still taking today.  He’s outlived the life expectancy the doctor gave him and his ejection fraction is now in the normal range.  I am so thankful for the medical care he has received and that I still have my dad by my side today.  And that is why I want to share some information about heart care available in Cleveland, Ohio for infants, children, adolescents, as well as adults.

The care my father received has made me extremely loyal to Cleveland Clinic and I know without a doubt if one of my children were to need heart care there is no where else I would feel comfortable taking them.  Please take a moment to check out Cleveland Clinic Children’s website or give them a call at 216.444.KIDS.
