Happy Fourth of July weekend!  Later this afternoon the Harper household will be heading to Portage Lakes State Park to enjoy this beautiful weather with my sister, her boyfriend, my parents, and some close family friends.  The girls are so excited to spend some time on the water relaxing on a pontoon boat and playing on the private beach.  I can’t wait to spend time with family, grill out, and watch the amazing Portage Lakes fireworks display over the lake.

There’s just something about being on the water that just forces you to relax by escaping the stresses of the day to day grind.  It’s so much easier to unplug and simply enjoy family time.  Maybe it’s the concern of getting your gadgets wet.  Or the inevitably spotty service while on the lake.  But 84% of parents agree that their children would be more likely to unplug on a boat trip versus a road trip*.

Plus it’s literally impossible to get bored on a boat.  Kick back, read a good book, and work on your tan.  Drop anchor and take a swim.  More of a thrill seeker?  Why not try water skiing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing, or tubing.  And then there is my girls favorite – fishing.  They were so excited to see a catfish their Uncle Andrew caught.

But for a mom one of the absolute best perks of spending a day out on the lake is that all the fresh air and activity is sure to wear the kiddos out.  My girls always crash at the end of the day and sleep so peacefully.  Hopefully this happens today so they can get a good nap and will then be able to enjoy the fireworks display once the sun goes down.

Are you ready to get out on the water, but maybe don’t quite know where to start?  Then you will definitely want to check out Discover Boating.  This is an amazing online resource where you can learn about all things boating.  A great place to start if you want to go boating today is the “get on the water” tab where you can find safety information, rentals, and much more.  Simply enter your city and state or zip code to find a list of boat rentals near you.  I was surprised to see we had 11 rental locations very close by!

How will you be celebrating the Fourth of July?  If it’s on the water I know you’ll be having a blast like us!
