Today is the first day of spring and the weather forecast is looking promising for warmer temperatures.  I hate to wish spring away, but I just can’t wait for summer to get here to spend our days playing by the pool.  Luckily in Ohio we have some amazing indoor water parks available and two weeks ago we visited one of our favorites – Castaway Bay – in Sandusky, Ohio. That weekend getaway helped my girls to beat some of their winter boredom blues and also sparked their excitement for summer to get here quickly too.

Castaway Bay Toddler Tide PoolWhen entering the Castaway Bay resort you will feel like you’ve stepped right into the Caribbean. In fact the moment you walk through the main doors you will be immediately greeted with a giant shipwreck complete with parrots that just might talk if you are patient enough.  The resort features 237 hotel rooms and suites including many family-oriented units.  We stayed in a Tarpon Suite which included a king size bed as well as two sets of bunk beds in their own room.  Our room also had two televisions, a double sink vanity, mini fridge, and microwave making it perfect for our family of six.  The resort also features a fitness center, 6,000-square-foot state-of-the-art arcade, a craft and child activity center, three restaurants, retail shops, adjacent marina as well as space for meetings, group events and birthday parties.  Of course the 38,000-square-foot indoor waterpark is Castaway Bay’s centerpiece with its five-story structure featuring a vaulted wood ceiling that covers a natural setting of palm trees, huts, inland lagoons and plenty of wet and wild water adventure.

The wonderful thing about Castaway Bay’s indoor water park is that there is something for everyone to enjoy no matter their age or desired thrill level.

This year my oldest daughter, Alleigh, was tall enough to ride even the tallest and fastest water slides!  It took a little convincing, but soon she and her father were racing each other to see who would end up in the pool at the end of the Tropical Tube Slides the fastest.  Dustin, Alleigh, and Kaelyn all loved the Rendezvous Run which is a 35-foot-high, 520-foot-long water roller coaster that propels riders uphill using water jets. This unique water coaster twists its way through the waterpark, shoots outside the resort’s structure in an enclosed slide and then spirals back into the complex.

The Lookout Lagoon Family Funhouse is a gigantic multi-story interactive play area with more than 100 different elements, including a 1,000-gallon tipping bucket that drenches guests every two minutes with a downpour of water.  It also includes four different water sides – Mango Melee, Paradise Plunge, Pineapple Pipeline, and Tropical Twister.  Alleigh, Kaelyn, and Willow all loved exploring this structure and zipping down the water slides over and over again.

Lilah and Willow both enjoyed the Toddler’s Tide Pool which featured a tandem slide, water pipes, spraying gadgets and sea creature play structures designed especially for kids.

Another big favorite of my big kids was the 100,000 gallon Castaway Bay Wave Pool that generates 3-foot-tall waves which guests can body surf.  I lost count of how many times Alleigh traversed the Cargo Crossing.  She also enjoyed playing in the Creature Cove shooting baskets and floating on the different sea creatures.

One spot that the entire family couldn’t get enough of was The Grotto which is a 50-person indoor/outdoor whirlpool spa where guests can kick back and relax in a calming atmosphere.

After a few hours of playing hard my two youngest were getting rather worn out, but the big kids and hubby were still going strong.

I got the little ones changed into dry clothes and took them to Club Castaway to participate in some arts and crafts activities where they had a blast coloring some tropical themed t-shirts.  I may have helped just a little, hehe.

Does your family need to beat the cold weather blues too?  If so head to Castaway Bay where the weather is always perfect and the temperature is always 82 degrees!  And guess what?! One lucky Happenings of the Harper Household reader is going to win a family four pack of day passes to visit the water park.  To enter fill out the entry form below.  Good luck!
